Home wreckers Ch.3:
Fawn stood from the curb with the exact same amount of knowledge that she had when she first started to read it. Nothing... She finished off the last of the Skittles and shut the book. It still told her absolutely not-a-thing. She would have to be on her toes if that Manticore would be coming around more often... With the beast in a disguise she would have to be careful.
I was out until nine, waiting and watching. But no monster came forth. If anything, I had eaten my weight in park hotdogs while I waited. The only thing worth reporting to mom was that the guy that stayed all night and fed the birds might be a gargoyle... other than that, nada. As I climbed the steps to my home, noticing that the broken window was boarded up and that everthing now smelled flower fresh and not like that of a zoo. Mom must have cleaned while dad went to Home Depot. Dad really was a great handy man. He could fix just about anything.
"Mom?" I called upon my entrance.
"In the bedrooms!" she called. She sounded so far away. She must've been folding clothes.
I walked in her ro0om first, but she wasn't there so I went to mine. She was standing in front of my dresser. It could hold clothes and had a mirror attached to the front. Mom had a thin white powder on the floor by the dressers feet and had my compact that I had lost about a week ago.
"What are you doing...? Or do I not want to know?" I sighed. I would have to clean that powder up after dinner, I knew it!
She smiled at me and turned back to the closet and her swirling powder. It was moving ever so slightly to the small compact in her hand when it hit me. She was making the entrance from which all the creatures came, change so I wouldn’t have to worry about them coming in at night.
“Reflective surfaces… Did you read about that in there? She was referring to the book which was snug under my arm. I nodded. “Good, come here for a minute…”
She had me sit and watch as she spoke the words smooth and perfectly. I was in awe and wanted to hear more. I had no clue that my mom had done some pretty cool stuff back in the day! As I sat and listened and watched her move her hands and chant some really long sentence that I had no clue what it meant, until she stopped and told me.
“I’m transferring the power of your dresser, here, to the compact, which you can carry around and talk to whatever comes out next…” she took a dramatic paused and then laughed at my face. She was doing an awful lot of that lately…
“There’s going to be more…?” I wasn’t liking what she was doing now.
Mom walked over to me and sprinkled some power on top of my head while chanting some different set of words. How did she have all of these memorized?
“This is so they can find you more easily. You have to help them get back home since the sticky note must have fallen off when you were coming home.” She glanced at the papers edge of the book. There was a sticky note there?
My finger felt along the pager and nothing was there. The paper had to hold the chant, spell, or whatever that would send these monsters packing! And of course, I had to lose it! Mom could sense my stress rising and said something to reassure me.
“They only enter through the Black haze when you’re alone, they have that much decency at least, right.” she handed over the compact. I took it reluctantly.
Then the compact jumped from my hands and wriggled on the carpet.
