“Hey you’re finally coming around, that’s great!”
“Who are you?”
“Well…let’s see…I have been called by many names but…I don’t really know my true one.”
“I don’t get it.”
“Well I’m a thief, and pretty darn good one at that. By the way, what did you do? No one has ever been dragged in unconscious before. You must have fought pretty hard.”
“What are you talking about? I’m in a tree house.”
“Wow they really did a number on you didn’t they. You can’t even remember where you are.”
“Then how about you tell me, since you seem so smart.”
“Well that’s for me to know and for you to find out. Anyways it might help if you opened your eyes.”
Peter opened his eyes to see a young boy sitting in front of him. He had blond hair that was dirty and messy. His eyes a bright blue and alive, he had freckles that filled his thinning cheeks. To Peter, the boy seemed to have just started adolescence. The boy was also wearing nasty, hole-filled clothes.
“Well you don’t seem blind. That’s good.”
“Well…that’s not nice.”
“Not my fault you were acting like it. You never opened your eyes.”
He looked at the boy with curiosity. He seemed familiar to him. He looked around to see he was not in the tree house. He was in a dungeon. Signs of dying dragons were nailed to the wall. No! It can’t be! I thought the city had killed this clan a long time ago. Peter returned his tension to the boy.
“By your expression, you seem to know these people.”
“I did a full essay on them when I was in school. Actually it was when I was in college. They were annihilated when I was three.”
“Geeze you’re old! My dad’s the same age as you…I think.”
“Who’s your dad?”
“Well, before I say his name you should know something. I hate him and I wish he would die.”
“Okay, what is it?”
“Franky Willub, his name is Franky Willub.”
Peter’s eyes widen, the son of the bully how has teased and mocked him for years was sitting right in front of him. He sat up and looked at the boy more closely. The only resemblance between him and Franky was the blond, messy hair. His face softens at the sight of him. He remembered the first woman he ever fell in love with. She had the same eyes, the same amount of freckles, and the same thin cheeks. A small smile came to his face.
“What is it,” asked the boy.
“Nothing, it’s nothing.”
The boy still questioned him. Even his mannerisms are the same. Peter closed his eyes. Her face was still imprinted in his mind. After the boy asked for the twentieth time Peter told him about his old love. How he fell in love. How he was going to ask her on a date. How he resembled her.
Peter even told him about how his father stole her away from him. It started the day of the harvest. She, of course, was the harvest queen for the second time. He won the award for the science fair for the tenth time. He always won first prize, ever since the first time he entered. That year was different. Since he entered the adult competition his prize was the regular prize money but it also included a date with the harvest queen.
His heart raced as she walked towards him. During the evening he never stopped blushing. He told her how he thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever met. She, in return, gave him a kiss on the cheek. Even though he was red he became even redder. They went on the carousel, then the Farris wheel.
Near the end they ran into Franky. He started acting tough by shoving Peter out of the way. Peter got back up, and with all the strength he had, tried to push Franky back. He didn’t want to let the date finish the way he knew it would. He wanted it to be perfect. Franky didn’t budge. He started laughing then called for his gang.
As if they were waiting for his call they swarmed around him. He ordered half of them to take care of Peter. He other half would help him with ‘his’ new girlfriend. That’s when Peter knew that they were in trouble. He yelled and screamed for help while trying to protect her but no help came. The gang beat him until he couldn’t take it anymore and he blacked out.
“And the next thing I knew was that I was in the hospital,” concluded Peter.
“Wow!”
“Yeah, but the thing that gets me is what the nurse told me.”
“What was that?”
“Well…She said that everyone who helped with the beating had died.”
“What, how…how did they die?”
“Cut to pieces, or beheaded by something. They don’t know how either, they think a sword but there wasn’t any around.”
“Weird, but so cool! Do you know what happened to the girl?”
Peter then explained how her story happened. Franky took her to his house. His gang forced his parents to leave. He then had his way with her. Once he found out she was pregnant, he tried to kill her. She ran. Protected by the king she couldn’t be touched. Once the baby was born she risked buying diapers for it on her own. It was then that Franky took his chance.
“I’ve never heard from her again. I told her that she could stay with me, but she didn’t want me to get hurt.”
“And you think that, that baby was me?”
“You couldn’t look more like her, well maybe except for being a girl.”
They both laughed. Peter felt that the boy was different from Franky. He could tell that this boy wouldn’t hurt someone for fun. That he had a soul. A kind soul that bad things had happened to.
Suddenly the door opened. A man, clad all in black armour stood at the cell. He was intimidating. A sword was tied to his side. He motioned for the two to stand.
“You both are coming with me.”
The trials for us, they are too soon. We are doomed.
