The couples whirled around the ballroom in a flurry of black tails and brightly-colored skirts. Amadahy watched from behind her mask, transfixed, then turned to Aaron. "Let's dance."
"I...can't," he admitted. "Sorry."
"Come." She offered him a hand, taking a half-step towards the dance floor. "I'll teach you. I've been told I dance rather well." Aaron hesitated, and she added, "Don't you want to impress Mithura?"
The teenager sighed, caught between a rock and a hard place, then took her hand lightly and allowed himself to be whisked out to the center of the room. Amadahy took his left hand and placed it on her waist, took up his right in her left, and draped her other hand on his shoulder. "Now, there are three beats to a measure in a waltz..."
"I know that," Aaron interjected, condescending.
"Fine, then--teach yourself to dance."
"No, no, I need help...sorry."
"Okay, come on. It's not too hard. 'At each beat, move your feet,' that's what my father always said. Just shift one way, wiggle around a bit..." She stepped to the right, back left, then spun so they were opposite each other. He mimicked her movements, a bit clumsily, as they tried it again. But by the end of the song, he was leading her across the floor, grinning at his new talent. From then on, dancing would always be his strong suit; he'd just needed a little push in he right direction.
