African-American Women!
Black Women: Where Do We Stand?

Black women, as myself, tend to fall in their own category. We ARE African-American and we ARE women. What’s the disadvantage of that?…People of society put us down because we’re black and they put us down because we’re women. We’ve been keeping ourselves silence at the bottom of the society pyramid for SO long. It makes me think: “Is there actually a way to climb back up?”

Hip-Hop doesn’t give a lot of pride to us. Sure, some rappers are good lyricist or good producers. But think about it…how do we appear in this manners? Well, if you want to know… look at the videos that our so-called rappers create. How do we look? Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Black women are wearing short, small, revealing clothes and the worse part is that women (as well as girls) are looking up to them.

As a group of African-Americans discuss, when you focus more on knowledge…you won’t focus as much external beauty. When you are focusing more on external beauty, then you won’t focus more on your damn education. How come ONLY a few black women were able to apply themselves to both intelligence and beauty? Because those women aren’t manipulated by either characteristic. But the sad part is the percentage of women concentrating on their studies is most likely not as important as her looks.

On the TV, black women are seen as the point of view a guy might want her. Long hair, kinky clothes, big a**, etc. are all known to be shown. Girls at young ages then think there are suppose to be like that so they get clothes and act a similar image so she would be consider a “fake” beauty (as I would describe it). These music videos teach more to young black female children and teens than what they’re suppose to learn from their parents (especially mother).

Taking picture that reveals yourself shows how much respect you REALLY have to yourself. I personally don’t care how “sexy” you are, but you shouldn’t show or do so much to men, who might only want to be your one night stand or dance partner.
