I like Brian Jacques as well. What's wrong with J.K Rowling? Harry Potter is a bit geeky but the books matured as Harry did. That was some pretty deep and dark stuff. No kiddy stuff.

Now that I think of it, I have heard of Tamora Pierce and everyone says she's good. She has a lot of books though if I'm thinking of the right person.
