Road Walker
Once there was a woman and her child. They lived and worked as one. Shared the same bed, and loved for each other in ways they knew no others could. They lived in forever-spring.
But then the child grew ill. The woman tried every remedy, prayed every night, and could only suffer with her babe as it sickened. Finally, one morn, the child refused to wake. A chill swept through the summer air.
The woman set the child in the earth. Each day she sat by the grave and laid her head upon the mound by night. Her hair grew long and unkempt. Her lamentations mingled with curses and entreaties, falling red, gold, yellow-orange about her lap and tangling her locks. For what cruel master, what heartless deity would strike low one so young and pure?
Through this she wept ceaselessly, not a second passed when she was not reminded in some way of her missing heart. Her tears turned to crystals, each bearing a different memory. The matted hair powdered white with them. Seven years were spent in the darkness of winter.
Then, one day, a traveller came upon the woman and enquired of the strange winter and her tears. She replied to this, "I have lost my one joy. My child--my child is gone from me to where I cannot follow."
"You may follow your child. Do you truly wish it, though?"
The woman faced him with a scowl. "I will sojourn there to this place, be it where it may, and care not for peril as long as my babe is returned to my arms!"
So the man bade her lay down and close her eyes. She obeyed and a road opened before her. Down it she ran, scooping the child into her arms and twirling about. The woman's form was put to the pyre and she lay beside her child in the earth once more.
Tell me what you think. Please give title ideas. ^-^
