Station 3 – Danbie and Cynthia
Station 3 - fructose
1. a) Fructose includes a ketone as a functional group rather than an aldehyde.
d)
station 4 – alpha galactose
3. If we were to build beta galactose, the OH bonded to carbon-1 would be above the plate ring, instead of below.
Station 5
2.
station 6
2. this molecule would likely to appear in liquid form because it is polyunsaturated.
3. unsaturated fatty acids are better for your diet because they decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein and increase the level of high-density lipoprotein.
Station 7
2. Glycerol molecule is also essential to the formation of this structure.
3.
Station 8
1. Lipids are not polymers because they can not be broken down into smaller units.
Station 1
2 a) A polymer is a substance composed of smaller repeating units or monomers, connected by covalent bonds.
b) i)chitin, gylcogen ii) amylopectin
3. the glucose molecule joins with a N containing group attached at carbon-2.
Station 2
2. a) beta glucose is found in cellulose.
b) in cellulose, straight chain polymer of beta glucose with beta-1,4-glycosidic linkages are formed. These tight bundled linkage are undigestable by human, however, it does act as roughage scraping intestinal walls.
3. beta glucose is an isomer of alpha glucose because they have the same molecular formula but different structure ( alpha glucose has the OH on carbon-1 bonded below the plate ring while beta glucose has the OH on top of the ring)
