Because.
It belongs to the author not the fans
This applies to Star Wars and Hitchikers.

I have noticed that many fanatical people get upset when an author or director changes something in a movie. Like 'Ford is supposed to be white' or 'Greedo shouldn't shoot first'.

I am sure Lucas and Douglas are/were very appriciative of all the fans. But it is not the fans choice to have all the actors in hitchiker to be British, or for JarJar to be tortured slowly over a spit.

Appreciate the movie as is, don't compare to some fantasy version you got in your mind while reading, or be disappointed that the director was given enough budget to change it back to the way he originally wanted it to be shot.

((This rant assumes that as the credits indicate Douglas did play a big part in writing the movie script and is brought to you by the letter Porkchop))

First off- I don't relly care when directors make changes. Most of the time its for the better, like not having the long conversation about making some guy lay in the dirt in front of the bulldozer. Its best left out. Also, I don't really care that Ford was black. The actor fit the roll, and it worked out well.

What I do care about is when they add in things like "A point of view gun". Or when they have stuff like "Lets take his head". Those are HUGE story altering changes. Plus, the love between Trillian and Arthur. Ek.

I don't think Douglas had much to say about the final outcome of the movie since he is dead. stare

My friend Kubo re-read the book over the last couple of days. And according to him, nothing much happens. It is more of an introduction to the rest of the series and basically gets them into space and onto magrathia.

And don't argue the point I didn't read it, argue if that is not true. 2+2 is still 4 regardless of whether or not I took elementry mathmatics.

Unfortunately American movie goers can't stand a movie that doesn't end well. Changes had to be made to make the movie end well, like knocking out the bad guys, deciding he would rather not stay on earth, and getting the girl.

Look at the movie as a movie, not as the book put on screen. As a movie it was excellent. Sort of like Lord of The rings trilogy- They leave a lot out and add stuff in, but all in all they were great movies.
