So, it's Gaia, that is Earth.
Think about when Earth will be so polluted that natural environment will be only read about. That is possible.
So, people 'live' in virtual worlds. Those who can afford. The rest does social work and cleans up. By cleaning, they can earn money that will allow them go 'virtual' and forget about the poor earth again.
One day, someone gets to Gaia - and tells the whole truth...
