In the middle of the night,
A child awakens with a fright,
Waking from a dream,
He hears a loud scream,
His mom is on the floor,
She can’t take much more,
His eyes begin to flood,
Because she’s covered in blood,
Through his watery tear,
He sees his father standing near,
His father is standing above,
For his wife there is no love,
As the father goes to strike the final blow,
The child screams out “NO”,
The mother says she’s okay,
Acting like this doesn’t happen to her everyday,
The neighbours know but they don’t care,
They say it isn’t their burden to bear,
Why does the mother stay?
Why can’t she just run away?
If she runs she might not live,
Even though he has no love to give,
She will take all the pain,
Hoping he will love again,
His newest threat is one to fear,
If she runs her child won’t see next year,
She wants her child to be okay,
Maybe he’ll go back to the day,
To when he didn’t make a threat,
Back to when they first met,
What was it that changed him so?
Where did his heart go?
Did this change happen in a day?
Or was he always this way,
Could anyone prevent?
What led up to this event?
Did something happen in his younger day,
That caused him to turn out this way,
Or am I the one to blame,
For starting this violent game.

- Title: In The Middle Of The Night
- Artist: The No Life Queen
- Description: I wrote this after a project in my grade 11 sociology class. We had to pick topics that currently affect society. I chose spousal abuse, and this poem appeared in my head after I saw the amount of children that see their parents be abused.
