There is a whole load of backstory to Paine, if you have played FFX-2. I get the feeling there was a whole supply of hurt, disgust, distrust, anger, despair, lonelyness, & betrayal inside poor Paine. She's strong and a survivor but there is that one part of herself that she closes off to protect herself from any more pain.
